Christians should have the answers, shouldn’t they? Depression affects many people both personally and through the ones we love. “With dramatic story-telling and emotive imagery from the real-life struggles of Charles Spurgeon, Eswine pulls the reader into a volume that will give courage to the depressed and build empathy in the hearts of well-meaning but under-informed friends in the church. His stated goal (21) is not to write the definitive book on depression (such a book would be less likely to be received well by the person who is depressed) but to offer some helpful wisdom in a form that is more likely to be received as a loving gesture from a wise friend. Consider these helpful thoughts: "sadness is neither a sign of laziness nor a sin … In this fallen world, sadness is an act of sanity, our tears the testimony of the sane." (28) He explains that "conversion to Jesus isn't heaven, but its foretaste" so that the healing and cure we may experience in this life is often partial and looks forward to a more complete healing and deliverance in the life to come (36). Eswine has a helpful triad which he uses to summarize the complex of causes behind depression: circumstance, chemistry, and spirit (54). The section on "Rupture of Meaning" starting on page 79 was very helpful to me, describing significant seasons of my own life. ”
